Disc Injuries: Herniated Discs, Bulging Discs, and Disc Degeneration
Back pain is an unfortunate part of life for many people, but it doesn't have to be that way. At Rivertown Chiropractic & Wellness, serving North Saint Paul and Stillwater, our chiropractor is here to help you overcome common back injuries.
Understanding Disc Injury
In order to understand how back injuries happen, it's important to first understand the anatomy of the spine. The spine is made of small bones called vertebrae, and in between each of those bones is a small, soft disc. These discs have a rubbery exterior, and are filled with a soft, goo-like substance.
For many people, the exterior of the discs begin to degenerate as a normal part of the aging process. This can leave discs more susceptible to herniation or bulge. When a disc experiences a bulge, some of the soft material on the inside of the disc has created a change in the shape of the exterior of the disc. When a disc herniates, the soft material tears through the exterior of the disc, and some of the soft material pushes through the tear.
Bulging and Herniated Disc Symptoms
The bulge or herniation of a disc in and of itself is rarely the main source of pain when it comes to disc injury. The bulge of the disc, or the herniated material, often presses on nerves in the back, causing intense, radiating pain. Many people have pain not only near the disc, but also in the extremity closest to the injury.
Disc Injury Treatment
When you come in for your first appointment, our chiropractor will evaluate your injury. You'll likely undergo a spinal adjustment, which will realign your spinal column. Many people find that a spinal adjustment takes pressure off of injured discs, relieving pain and allowing the healing process to begin. Our chiropractor may suggest other treatments as well, such as stretching, massage, corrective exercise, and/or hot and cold therapy.
