Chronic-Stress Related Pain
When you think of the causes for pain, stress usually isn’t on that list. We at Rivertown Chiropractic and Wellness in Stillwater know in chiropractic care that stress and pain often overlap each other going hand in hand. This is particularly important if you suffer from chronic stress.
What is Chronic Stress?
Stress is a normal part of daily life. It’s our body's way of reacting to danger and threats. For example, say we face a work deadline, and you waited down to the minute to get it done. Stress kicks in your heart pumps faster, adrenaline kicks in, you deliver your assignment on time. Crisis averted your body, and then relaxes returning to normal. What happens, though, if your body's response to stress does not stop? It is said your body then is in a state of chronic stress. We know too much stress can take a toll on our body’s health.
Some signs include:
- Digestive problems
- Frequent illnesses
- Difficulty concentrating
How Chronic Stress and Pain Relate
One of the things that happen in the body when it gets kicked into stress mode is our muscles tense up. This is the body's way to protect us from injury. The body then picks up the danger/threat is over our muscles relax. If your body is in a constant state of stress, or whatever is stressing you have not gone away the body is still going to be in stress mode. The muscles are going to be in a constant state of tenseness, therefore, leading to back pain, shoulder pain, headaches, overall whole-body pain. Stress also affects the nervous system as well as activating it, which can lead to the brain to process pain more severely too. Thus, it is effortless to see how chronic stress and pain can be related. How chronic stress can lead to the worsening of chronic pain too. This discovery leads to us not only treating chronic pain but also our overall stress health as well.
